Here are some tips for maintaining and forming your hedges:

• For most types of hedges, it is best to fine-trim them during spring, and this can be done as much as you like. Summer is the season to carry out up to two major trims- towards the middle of the season and end of season
• Trim your hedges shortly after planting them. If the bush is deciduous, go so far as to cut it back by half, as it will grow quite quickly
• Trimming your hedges on an angle gives the leaves the best opportunity to grow back bushy and thick
• Don’t make the mistake of trimming hedges without a hand-held pruner. Use this tool to cut back some spaces within the hedges’ internal. This will allow for light and air to flow through the branches, giving you a completely healthy hedge (avoiding the ‘lovely on the outside, and dead on the inside’ bush).
