Pruning & Trimming

Pruning verses Trimming

Did you think they were the same thing? People do often use these two terms synonymously, however, they are somewhat different. When pruning, we are cutting off dead, unhealthy and broken branches, stems and leaves of a plant or tree. While when trimming, we are cutting back overgrown plants.

The importance of pruning and trimming

From the obvious cosmetic improvements to maintaining the health of your plants, there are many benefits to having your plants and trees regularly pruned and trimmed:

  • First, imagine the potential of your garden when all unhealthy branches and stems are clipped away. A beautiful garden is one that is thriving and full of greenery.
  • The management of insects and general pests becomes much easier when pruning regularly. Insects and pests such as the Tent Worm, eat foliage from the plant and then nest amongst its unhealthy shrubbery.
  • Here is one of the most obvious reasons regular trimming of overgrown plants benefits your property. Your home is much safer when there are no overhanging branches looming above. Also, hazardous branches can cause many safety issues for electrical wires and roads.
  • Plant and tree growth can be stimulated through regular pruning and trimming. Believe it or not, pruning and trimming improve a root’s strength, therefore the plant or tree will be more able to withstand a windy day or a storm.

When is the best time to prune and trim?

Below is a general guide for trees and some popular plants and shrubs in Australia. Please contact a professional at Top Cut Lawn Mowing to discuss the needs of your garden.

For a General Tidy Up – For most trees, Magnolia, Lilly pilly and Japanese maple, prune and trim in late winter to early spring.

Hydrangeas and Cane Shrubs – Cut off a third of old branches in winter.

Perennials and Deciduous Shrubs – Prune back all of the flowering stems in mid-winter to early spring.

Bush and Standard Roses – Remove all dead twigs, and any which are growing towards the centre. It is best to do this during the middle of winter.
